Jewish Heritage

The city has remains of what was once a typical Jewish Quarter in the Middle Ages: steps, narrow streets and balconied houses.

You will learn about Jewish heritage not only in Porto but throughout Portugal from Sepharad, the Middle Age Jews and the terrible times of the Inquisition, the Modern Age New Christians and the Jewish Renaissance 20th century.

We will have a guided visit to the largest synagogue standing on the Iberian Peninsula named Mekor Haim/The Fountain of Life, founded by Captain Arthur Barros Bastos in 1938.

Then we will walk through the narrow streets and UNESCO centre from the Sé Cathedral, where the first synagogue was built, to Montes dos Olivais where the Jewish Quarter was situated.
