Guimarães & Vinho Verde

Located in the district of Braga, the picturesque town of Guimarães is one of the most important historical destinations of the country. D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, chose this ancient Roman city as capital of the Kingdom of Portugal after his victory at the Battle of São Mamede in 1128. Known as the “Cradle of the Nation”, Guimarães is a fascinating place to visit, with its proud castle and well-preserved medieval quarter. The city was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2001.

This charming historic city is a maze of winding alleys lined with old houses decorated with statues that lead to the beautiful main square, Largo da Oliveira, and the old Ducal Palace. The best time to enjoy the medieval atmosphere of Guimarães is the first week of August, during which annually celebrate the Gualterianas Parties (held since 1452), with an important medieval style handicraft market, arts fair and lively parade of costumes old.
